Public Meetings

The Board generally schedules one public meeting each month.  Study Sessions, which provide opportunities for in-depth and informal board discussions of issues, are held as needed. Regular Action Sessions, where the Board votes on recommendations made by the Superintendent or Treasurer, are held on the fourth Tuesday of the month.  Please check the School Calendar for exact dates and times.  Meetings begin at 6:00 PM and are held in the Cafeteria at Oberlin Elementary School.   Public announcement is made of any change in this schedule.  Executive sessions are scheduled to discuss confidential matters as defined by state law. These sessions are announced, but they are not open to the public.  The Board of Education also holds regular public forums. These forums are publicized in advance and they provide an opportunity for discussion on matters of special interest to the public.  Oberlin Board of Education meetings are broadcast live or tape-delayed on  our Youtube Channel, Stream.oberlinschools.net .

Public Participation

The Board welcomes public input in its deliberations. If you would like to ask questions or make brief comments on an agenda item, the Board President, at his/her discretion will recognize you at the end of the Board discussion, and prior to a vote being taken. In addition, if you wish to address the Board on a matter not on the agenda you may sign in at the monthly Action meeting. You will be recognized during a "Hearing of the Public" at the end of the Board meeting.  Bylaw 0169.1 "In order to permit the fair and orderly expression of such comment, the Board shall provide a period for public participation at every regular meeting of the Board and publish rules to govern such participation in Board meetings (E) Each statement made by a participant shall be limited to three (3) minutes duration."

Functions of the Board

The Board of Education is responsible for developing and updating policies, approving the budget, hiring the Superintendent and the Treasurer, and considering action on recommendations made by the Superintendent and/or the Treasurer on such matters as personnel, policy, budget and curriculum.  Members of the Board are not authorized to act individually, except when voting at a board meeting.   No member of the Board may represent the Board outside of a meeting unless the Board votes to delegate that authority.
