OCS Press Release Regarding Security

Oberlin City Schools Community:

There was an incident, which occurred off school property last night on February 21, 2018. The incident involved an Oberlin High School student and students outside of the district. Oberlin Police Department is currently aware and investigating the incident. There was no threat to the school or the district

The district takes the security of our children and staff very seriously. Oberlin City Schools is currently operating on a normal school schedule but with heightened level 1 lockdown security: Exterior doors locked, monitored movement in the hallways, and more of an interior and exterior safety presence.

With the recent senseless tragedies of school violence in our state and country, the safety of our schools, students, and staff have never been more on the forefront of everyone’s minds. The safety of our district is a topic that never leaves my focus and is my number one concern.

The district has made additional safety precautions in the past several years in all of our school buildings: emergency response radios, additional cameras, updating our safety manuals, collaboration with our first safety responders, working with the Oberlin Police Department on Active Shooter training, and many more safety measures.

Oberlin City Schools and along with Oberlin Police Department have and will continue to improve our safety procedures for the district.

As always, we ask all parents, staff, children, and community members to be alert to suspicious activity, and contact the school administrator and/or police immediately if anything unusual is observed.

Once again, we have not received any threats towards the district. If we do, we will work with the local law enforcement agencies, FBI, and prosecutors. The district has zero tolerance towards anyone making a threat.

Sincerely,

Dr. David Hall

Oberlin City Schools

Superintendent
